Jan Stary, Ph.D.

Jan Stary has Ph.D. in Czech and English Philology and American Studies from Charles University, Prague. He worked as Assistant Professor at the English Department of the School of Arts, Charles University in Prague, later also as a translator and interpreter for Czech President Vaclav Havel and his advisors. In 1991-93, Jan taught the Czech Language, Literature, and Culture as a Fulbright Professor at University of Washington in Seattle. Between 1995 and 1998, he was Cultural Counselor at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, D.C. with a special focus on organizing musical events, being in charge of the cultural exchange between the Czech Republic and the U.S.A. After retiring from his diplomatic career, Jan started his own photographic business RockHeart Images (owner) and makes living as a free-lance photographer. He has shown his art in many galleries in the U.S.A., Poland, and the Czech Republic. He currently teaches Art Photography Class at ECES Program affiliated with Charles University in Prague, and occasionally speaks as a guest speaker at different colleges and universities. Jan also keeps working as a free-lance translator and interpretor, and writes a regular column for the Metro Daily in Prague. Most recently, he got engaged in helping students at International Conservatory in Prague with their English language proficiency.
